In addition, the county enjoys an outstanding reputation for that most famous of Irish pursuits, horseracing and is home to the largest thoroughbred breeding centre in the world, at Coolmore Stud Farm.

Clonmel Races, inside rail It is no surprise then that there are some great racecourses too and at Powerstown Park in Clonmel, the standard of racing does justice to the truly beautiful setting. Clonmel races are what home grown horseracing is all about in Ireland.

Powerstown Park is situated some 2km from Clonmel town centre and it truly defines countryside racing by virtue of the locale, surrounded by natural woodland and framed by Slievenamon and Comeragh mountains.

Lying on the main road to Tipperary from Waterford and Cork, the racecourse is convenient to get to and the bus station in the town is within easy walking distance from the course.

Clonmel races are well attended and supported by a knowledgeable, local race crowd and, on the premier race days, from people far and wide keen to experience high quality racing in a superb environment.

The countryside views at Clonmel are breathtaking whatever the season and there is all year round Clonmel races to take advantage of them. In May, June and September, evening races are held which adds an extra social dimension to the events; ideal for including a great summer night out as part of holiday plans in the area. For the committed race fans however it is winter and the jump season when Clonmel really comes to life.

The Clonmel Oil chase, held in the November, is the undoubted racing highlight of the season. A Grade II event, all the famous names in National Hunt racing turn out to compete in a highly charged and thrilling race spectacle.

Beef or Salmon has enjoyed particular success at the event and with Edredon Bleu was involved in one of the most exciting races of recent times.

Champion two-mile chaser Edredon Bleu won that encounter in 2003 and went on to triumph in the King George Chase. Dorans Pride is perhaps the best known and loved Irish champion to grace the Clonmel Oil Chase and won the race four years running, from 1997 to 2000.
Clonmel Races, winner

The track at Clonmel certainly offers the kind of challenges which test the best horses and this is a factor in the popularity of the course for riders, horses and fans. An undulating right handed oval of 1 mile and 2 furlongs takes its toll and the stiff incline to the finish tests stamina, strength and staying power to the limit. Great racing makes for a great atmosphere and at Clonmel races everyone is welcome to join the fun.

Clonmel Races, photo finish The admission price for adults is €15 and for OAPs and students with the relevant identification, €9. Children under the age of 14 can get in for free and there are discounts for group bookings.
